We are writing this because she is not the only person this has happened to. JLR vehicles are a target. Land Rovers, Range Rovers, Discoverys, Jaguars. Relay theft, key cloning, smash and grab. When it happens, the natural decisions people make often end up making the whole situation significantly worse.
This post walks you through exactly what to do, what to avoid, and how to get back on the road as quickly as possible.
Step One: Report It to the Police Immediately
Call 999 if the theft is in progress. If you discover the vehicle already gone, call 101 to report it as stolen. You will receive a crime reference number. Keep it somewhere safe. You will need it for your insurer, your finance or hire company, and potentially for compound release paperwork.
The police will log the vehicle on the PNC (Police National Computer). If it is picked up by an ANPR camera anywhere in the country, officers are notified automatically.
Get your crime reference number before you do anything else. Everything that follows depends on having it in writing.
Step Two: Call Your Finance or Hire Company Straight Away
This is the step most people skip. It feels like it can wait until the car is found, or until Monday morning. It cannot wait.
If your Land Rover or Jaguar is on a hire agreement, PCP, PCH or any form of finance, the vehicle does not legally belong to you yet. The finance company is the registered keeper. If that vehicle ends up in a police compound, only the registered keeper can authorise its release.
Police compounds do not release financed or leased vehicles on your word alone. They need written authorisation from the finance company, in writing, on a weekday. Our client brought her hire agreement, insurance documents and photo ID, exactly as the compound website asked for. She was still turned away because the hire company was closed on Saturday. The car stayed in the compound and storage fees started building immediately.
If you are on any form of finance or hire, phone that company the moment you report the theft. Ask specifically what they need to provide written authority for a compound release, and get it confirmed before anything else happens.

Check your original finance agreement. The registered keeper is listed there. It is usually the finance company, not you, until the final payment is made.
Step Three: Call Us Before the Car Goes Anywhere
When a JLR is stolen, the thief used the original key or cloned its signal. That key still works. Even if the thief has abandoned the vehicle, those keys exist somewhere. The car can be taken again the same night.
The moment your vehicle is recovered, every key ever associated with it needs to be deleted and fresh ones programmed. Until that happens, the car is not secure.

There are three options. Options 1 and 2 do not include deleting old keys. If you want that done, ask for Option 3 specifically.

The moment you discover the theft

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
