The fourth generation Range Rover (L405) ran from 2012 to 2022 and was the first all aluminium Range Rover, with a fully encrypted JLR security platform that simply does not respond to anything outside of authorised Land Rover diagnostic kit. How quickly can you replace a Range Rover (L405) key on site?

My L405 key still works on the buttons but the car no longer unlocks when I walk up to it, what is wrong?
This is normally a sign that the fob is reaching the end of its service life. The proximity unlock and walk away features draw more power than a simple button press, so they degrade noticeably before the fob stops responding altogether. A coin cell change can mask this temporarily but rarely lasts long on an older L405 fob. Smart keys have an effective service life of around 8 years, and the reliable fix once proximity stops working is a fresh genuine remote, paired on site in around 10 minutes.
I have lost my L405 keys on a road trip away from home, can you attend a remote location?

My L405 sometimes will not recognise the key when I press the start button, is that a key fault or a vehicle fault?
On the L405 this is usually a weakening fob rather than a vehicle issue. The start button antenna picks up a low energy signal from the fob, which fades earlier than the door unlock signal as the fob ages. The fastest test is to pair a fresh remote, which resolves the intermittent start problem in the vast majority of L405 callouts we attend. If a fresh fob does not fix it, the steering column receiver is the next most likely cause, but we will tell you that on site rather than have you spend on parts that may not be needed.
The dealer has said my L405 has a locked security module that can only be replaced, is module surgery really needed on a flagship car?
Almost never. We routinely attend L405s where a Land Rover dealer has insisted on a security module replacement, only to clear the lockout on the same visit using specialist JLR tooling and pair fresh keys without any module work at all. Genuine module failure on the L405 is rare. Before agreeing to invasive module surgery on a flagship Range Rover, a JLR specialist second opinion almost always saves time, expense and unnecessary intervention.
