It contains a transponder chip that must be cryptographically paired to the vehicle’s Body Control Module (BCM) before the immobiliser will allow the engine to start. Programming is the process of establishing that pairing. It requires:
- An OBD diagnostic interface that can communicate with JLR BCM protocols
- The correct PIN or dealer-level authentication token for your vehicle
- For 2022+ models with the new smart key system: a live server connection to JLR’s secure key authorisation platform
- A blank key that contains the correct transponder chip type for your model and year
