Fast Help:
Your Land Rover key fob has stopped working and you need a fast answer. In most cases, the fix takes under ten minutes and costs less than £5. This guide covers all five confirmed causes ranked in order of likelihood, with exact fixes for each one.
Applies to: Defender, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.
This is the cause in the majority of cases. Land Rover key fobs run on a CR2032 coin cell that lasts 12 to 24 months. Cold UK winters drain it faster. A telltale sign is the fob’s range shrinking gradually before it stops completely.
Cost: £2 to £5. Use Duracell, Panasonic, or Renata only. Cheap unbranded batteries cause intermittent faults that mimic ECU failures and waste diagnostic time.
Your Land Rover key fob may be perfectly fine but blocked by interference. Land Rover’s keyless system runs at 433MHz and is vulnerable to disruption from multi-storey car parks, petrol forecourts, railway stations, overhead power lines, and strong commercial WiFi networks.
No parts. No cost. Takes 60 seconds to rule out.
The fob works but the car does not recognise it. A flat 12V car battery, a dealer software update, or incorrect battery replacement can knock the fob’s rolling encryption code out of sync with the KVM (Keyless Vehicle Module).
If neither method works, the rolling code is too far out of sequence for a manual reset. Professional reprogramming using Land Rover-specific diagnostic software is the only solution. AJ Auto provides this service on-site anywhere in England.
Often missed because the fob keeps working for days after exposure before corrosion sets in. Rain, a wash cycle, or high humidity is enough to corrode the internal PCB. Damage always starts at the battery contacts and spreads outward. If it reaches the transponder chip, the fob cannot be reprogrammed and needs full replacement.
Open the fob and look for green or white deposits, dark staining, or residue around solder joints
Fix:If nothing above fixes it, the fault is inside the vehicle, not the fob. The 433MHz RF receiver antenna or the KVM module itself can fail due to age, corrosion, or a wiring fault. A corroded connection between the receiver and the BCM creates classic intermittent behaviour where the fob works some days and not others.
A completely flat 12V vehicle battery also kills the entire keyless system. Always check this first before assuming a module fault.
This fault requires specialist Land Rover coding equipment. Replacing a KVM module without the correct programming tools permanently locks out all keys. Do not attempt this without professional support.

Yes. Use the physical blade key hidden inside the fob to open the door. To start the engine, hold the fob against the start button as most Land Rover models have a backup induction reader built into it.
Main dealer charges typically run from £300 to £600 including programming. AJ Auto provides the same genuine-spec replacement at significantly lower cost, including mobile attendance across England.
Most cannot. Newer JLR models require LBAS (Land Rover Bypass Authentication System) credentials and brand-specific software that generic locksmiths do not carry. Using an unqualified locksmith risks a permanent programming conflict.
