Fast Help:

It’s an oddly specific Range Rover quirk: the fob unlocks the doors fine, but the lock button does nothing. The car won’t bleep, the indicators don’t flash, and you walk away with the vehicle unsecured.

Here’s how to diagnose it without a trip to the dealer.

Why Range Rovers Refuse to Lock The Real Reasons

1. A door, bonnet, or boot is not fully closed

Range Rovers won’t arm the alarm or central-lock if any opening sensor reports ‘ajar’. Most often it’s the boot or one of the rear doors not seated properly. Check the dashboard: it should show which one.

2. Faulty door latch micro-switch

The car thinks a door is open even when it’s closed. This is a known issue on L322 and L405 Range Rovers, the latch micro-switch wears out and reports a permanent ajar state.

Quick test: Press hard against the suspect door from the outside while pressing the lock button. If it locks, the latch is the problem.

3. The lock button on the fob is physically dead

Repeated wear can kill the lock button while leaving unlock fine. Sometimes you can feel it, the click is mushy or absent.

Quick test: Try the lock button on your spare key. If the spare locks the car normally, your primary fob’s lock button has failed and the fob needs replacing or repairing.

4. Boot/tailgate alignment

L405 and L494 Range Rovers have a notorious boot alignment issue. Over time the boot droops and the latch doesn’t fully engage. The car still drives, but it won’t lock until the boot is realigned.

5. Dead vehicle battery (yes, again)

If the 12v battery is below ~11.5v, central locking is one of the first systems to fail.

AJ Auto tip: Always check the dashboard warning area first. JLR vehicles tell you which door, bonnet, or boot is reporting open: that one fact saves an hour of diagnosis.

What to Do Next

If you’ve checked all doors are closed, tried the spare fob, and the vehicle battery is healthy: it’s a latch sensor or fob fault. Both are fixable, neither needs main dealer prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Range Rover key lock the car but not unlock it?+
This asymmetric fault usually points to a partially discharged battery that cannot generate enough signal power for the unlock command (which uses a longer handshake). Replace the battery and test both buttons.
How do I resynchronise a Range Rover key fob?+
Stand close to the vehicle, press the lock button 5 times quickly, then press unlock. On some models, you may need to insert the mechanical key into the door and turn it lock/unlock 3 times to reset the sync.
Can signal interference stop a Range Rover key from working?+
Yes — strong RF interference near mobile phone masts, Wi-Fi routers, or electronic security systems can temporarily block key fob signals. Move the vehicle to a different location and test.
What if my Range Rover key fob buttons are physically damaged?+
Damaged buttons or a cracked key fob casing require physical repair or replacement. AJ Auto can supply and programme a replacement fob at your location — the shell and electronics are typically replaced together.
Could a faulty BCM cause Range Rover key fob problems?+
In rare cases, yes. If multiple keys fail simultaneously, or if the key fob tests fine but the car does not respond, the Body Control Module or antenna system may be at fault. AJ Auto can diagnose this with live data tools.

When to go to a dealer instead

If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
