⚡ Quick Answer

Most JLR smart key fobs use a CR2032 battery, which costs under £2 and takes under 2 minutes to swap. If your key still does not work after a battery change, the fob may need resynchronising — hold the key against the start button to start the car, then drive for a few minutes.

Your Land Rover, Range Rover or Jaguar smart key fob runs on a small CR2032 coin cell battery. When it starts to fail, you’ll notice the range dropping, the car only unlocks when you’re very close, or you’ll see a “Key Battery Low” warning on the dashboard. The good news is that replacing it takes less than two minutes and costs under £2 at any supermarket or chemist.

Here’s exactly how to do it.

What You Need

Step-by-Step: How to Replace Your JLR Key Fob Battery

Step 1: Remove the Emergency Blade

On the back of your smart key fob, you’ll find a small release switch or button. Press or slide it to release the emergency blade: this is the physical metal key hidden inside the fob for occasions when the battery is completely dead. Slide the blade out fully and set it aside.

Step 2: Open the Key Fob Case

With the blade removed, you’ll see a small slot or seam where the two halves of the fob meet. Insert your flat-head screwdriver or coin gently into this slot and twist slightly to separate the case. Work around the edge rather than forcing it at one point, the case clips together and will open without snapping if you’re careful.

Step 3: Remove the Old Battery

Once the case is open, you’ll see the CR2032 battery seated in a holder. Note which way it’s facing, the positive (+) side usually faces up. Use your fingernail or a non-metal tool to gently pop the battery out of its holder. Avoid using a metal screwdriver directly on the battery contacts.

Step 4: Insert the New Battery

Place your new CR2032 battery into the holder with the positive (+) side facing the same direction as the old one. Press it down until it seats firmly. You should feel a slight click.

Step 5: Reassemble the Fob

Align the two halves of the case and press them firmly together until you hear all the clips snap back into place. The case should feel solid with no flex or gaps.

Step 6: Reinsert the Emergency Blade

Slide the emergency blade back into its slot until it clicks and locks securely in place.

Step 7: Test the Key

Stand a normal distance from your vehicle (around 5 to 10 metres) and press the lock or unlock button. If the car responds, the battery is working correctly. Also confirm that keyless entry, walking up to the door handle, still works as expected.

What If the Key Still Doesn’t Work After a New Battery?

If the fob still fails after a fresh battery, the issue is likely one of three things:

If you’re in any doubt, contact AJ Auto: we can diagnose and resolve all of the above, including re-syncing, fob replacement, and module repair, all on a mobile basis anywhere in England and Wales.

How Long Do JLR Key Fob Batteries Last?

Under normal use, a CR2032 battery in a Land Rover, Range Rover or Jaguar smart key typically lasts between one and three years. Keyless entry systems use the battery continuously in standby mode, which means heavy use of keyless entry can shorten the lifespan. If you leave the key fob near an entry point at home, the constant polling from the car’s receivers also drains the battery faster, another good reason to use a Faraday pouch when not driving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a Land Rover / Range Rover key fob use?+
Most Land Rover and Range Rover key fobs from 2010 onwards use a CR2032 lithium coin battery. Some older models use a CR2025. Check inside your key fob to confirm before purchasing.
How do I open my JLR smart key fob to change the battery?+
Locate the manual key blade release button on the fob, remove the blade, then use the blade or a flat screwdriver to gently split the fob casing at the seam. The battery sits in a tray — lift it out and replace without touching the circuit board.
Why does my Land Rover key not work after a battery replacement?+
If the key loses its synchronisation during the battery swap, it may stop responding. Try pressing any button 3–5 times near the car, or hold the fob directly against the start/stop button to force-start the vehicle.
Can a flat key fob battery stop a Land Rover from starting?+
A completely flat battery means the car's receiver cannot detect the key signal. However, JLR vehicles have a backup: hold the key fob directly against the brake pedal start button and press — this uses proximity sensing rather than radio signal.
How often should I replace my JLR key fob battery?+
Typically every 2–3 years under normal use. If your remote range has reduced noticeably or the car takes multiple presses to respond, replace the battery before it fails completely.
