What Is a Remote Key?

A remote key (sometimes called a button key or remote central locking key) requires you to press a button on the fob to lock or unlock the vehicle. Older Land Rover and Range Rover models used a flip-blade remote key — a folding fob where pressing the lock or unlock button sends an RF signal on the 433 MHz frequency to the vehicle’s receiver. The vehicle then actuates the door locks in response.

Remote keys also contain a transponder chip for immobiliser authentication. This chip communicates with the vehicle’s BCM or KVM each time a start is attempted, but the transponder is passive — it only responds when energised by the vehicle’s antenna field near the ignition. You can have a working remote key whose locking buttons fail while the transponder still works, or vice versa.

What Is a Proximity Key?

A proximity key (also called a passive entry key, keyless entry fob or smart key) does not require a button press for entry. The vehicle continuously broadcasts low-frequency (LF) electromagnetic fields through antennae embedded in the door handles. When the fob is carried into this detection zone — typically within 1 metre of the handle — the fob responds with its unique cryptographic code. If the code is valid, the doors unlock automatically when you touch or pull the handle.

Inside the vehicle, the same system detects the fob’s presence near the push-start button, authenticating the start sequence without inserting a key into a barrel. The proximity key also contains a traditional transponder that serves as a backup start mechanism if the LF system fails.

UWB — The Next Generation of Proximity

The latest Land Rover and Jaguar models use Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology instead of simple LF proximity fields. UWB uses short-pulse radio signals and time-of-flight measurement across multiple antennae to determine the fob’s precise location — accurate to a few centimetres. This allows the vehicle to know not just that the fob is present but exactly which door is closest to it, enabling door-specific unlock behaviour and preventing relay attacks that work by amplifying the LF field from inside a house.

Which Key Type Does Each Model Use?

Remote Key (button press required)

The Freelander 2 (all years) and Range Rover Sport L320 (2005–2013) used flip-blade remote keys as standard. Entry-level trims of the Jaguar E-Pace also use a standard remote rather than full proximity entry. Some early Discovery 4 variants use a standard remote — proximity entry was an option, not standard fit, on some trim levels.

LF Proximity Key (touchless entry)

Standard on the Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L494, Range Rover Evoque (2019+), Range Rover Velar, Discovery 5, Discovery Sport (mid-spec and above), Defender L316 (top trims), and all current Jaguar models including the F-Pace, I-Pace, XE (mid and above), XF and F-Type.

The Defender L663 (2020+) and Range Rover L460 (2022+) use UWB proximity technology. These systems are the most secure currently available from JLR and require the latest Pathfinder software for key programming.

Proximity Key Security and Relay Theft

LF proximity keys are vulnerable to relay attacks — criminals use two devices to extend the fob’s signal from inside a house to the vehicle outside. The vehicle cannot distinguish between the real fob nearby and a relayed signal, so it unlocks and can even be started. The UK government has published guidance on keyless vehicle theft prevention. Does My Key Type Affect Replacement Cost or Complexity?
