Two Types of Freelander 2 Keys

Depending on the year, your Freelander 2 will have one of the following:

  • 2006 to 2012: Slot-in key fob. The key slides into a slot on the dashboard and you press Start/Stop to fire up the engine. Uses a CR2032 coin battery inside the fob.
  • 2013 to 2015: The newer smart keyless fob, the same style as the early Evoque. No slot. Just keep it in your pocket and press the start button. Also uses a CR2032 battery.

Both types can fail in similar ways, mostly because the Freelander 2 is very sensitive to battery voltage, both in the key fob and in the car’s 12V battery.

Weak Key Fob Battery or Low Car Battery: The Most Misdiagnosed Freelander 2 Problem

One of the most common and frustrating misdiagnoses we see on Freelander 2s is owners (and even some garages) blaming the dashboard dock, the slot reader or the KVM module, when the real culprit is simply a failing CR2032 coin battery inside the key fob, or a weak 12V vehicle battery.

How a Weak Key Fob Battery Causes Confusion

When the CR2032 battery starts to go, it does not always die outright. It drops toward the lower end of its usable voltage range. At that point, the fob may still flash its LED when you press a button, so it appears to be working fine. But the signal it sends out is too weak or inconsistent for the car’s receiver to pick up reliably.

On 2006 to 2012 Freelander 2s with the slot-in key, a weak fob battery can make the dashboard completely unresponsive when you insert the key. The slot reader gets the blame. The KVM gets the blame. In reality, a fresh CR2032 costing under two pounds is all it needs.

On 2013 to 2015 keyless models, a weak fob battery causes the car to intermittently fail to detect the key, even when you are standing right next to the door or pressing the start button. Some owners get quoted hundreds of pounds for a module swap, when the actual fix is a new battery from any supermarket.

How a Low 12V Car Battery Causes Key Fob Failures

This is the part most owners and many garages miss entirely. When your Freelander 2’s main 12V vehicle battery is weak or on its way out, the car’s receiver modules, BCM (Body Control Module) and keyless antenna systems do not operate at full sensitivity. When the resting voltage drops below 12.5V, the BCM can start to behave erratically and fail to recognise the key fob signal, even if the key itself is perfectly fine.

What makes this particularly tricky is that the car may still start, the dashboard lights still come on, and the battery does not appear dead in any obvious way. But the voltage is just low enough to cause the keyless or immobiliser systems to play up. This is why so many Freelander 2 owners get “Smart Key Not Found” errors in cold weather or after the car has sat unused for a few days. The vehicle battery has dropped just enough to cross the threshold.

The result: owners assume the dock is faulty, or the key is broken, or the KVM needs replacing, when the real fix is either a new CR2032 in the fob or a new 12V car battery.

Quick Checks Before Assuming a System Fault

  • Replace the CR2032 in the key fob first. Even if it seems to work, voltage matters as much as basic function.
  • Test your 12V vehicle battery under load. Resting voltage should be 12.6V or above. Below 12.5V is a warning sign.
  • If fob issues started after a jump start or battery change, the immobiliser likely needs a re-sync rather than a replacement part.
  • Try holding the key close to the start button or the slot. If this works but normal use does not, battery voltage is the likely cause.

The “Smart Key Not Found” Problem

This is by far the most common Freelander 2 key fault we deal with. It usually happens after something straightforward like:

  • The battery going flat
  • Jump-starting the car
  • Changing the 12V battery
  • The battery being weak for an extended period (see the section above)
  • The car sitting unused for a while

The Freelander 2 does not like low voltage. When it dips, the key, the steering lock and the car’s immobiliser system can all lose sync with one another. The car effectively forgets that the key is authorised.

We fix this by re-syncing everything: the key, the BCM and the steering lock, so they all communicate properly again. This requires proper JLR diagnostic software. It cannot be done with a generic OBD reader.

Freelander 2 Key Fob Not Working After a Battery Change

This is extremely common and catches a lot of Freelander 2 owners off guard. You replace the vehicle battery, a routine enough job, and suddenly the key does not respond. This is not a coincidence and it is not a faulty new battery. The voltage disruption during the swap has caused the immobiliser to lose its sync with the key.

Searches like “Freelander 2 key not working after battery change”, “Freelander 2 smart key lost after new battery” and “Freelander 2 immobiliser reset after battery replacement” are among the most common things people look up after this happens, so you are not alone. A quick immobiliser re-sync sorts it and no new key is needed.

Remote Buttons Not Working or Working Only Sometimes

Intermittent remote locking is one of the most frequently searched Freelander 2 key fob faults. It is usually nothing major. The most common causes are:

  • Weak CR2032 key battery: replace this first before looking at anything else
  • Worn or cracked buttons on the fob shell
  • Cracked or corroded circuit board inside the fob
  • Water ingress damage, which is very common on Freelander 2 keys
  • On 2013 and later models: a failed keyless antenna in the door or cabin

We repair the key, replace the shell, or supply a new fob depending on what the fault turns out to be. Everything is tested before we leave.

Car Recognises the Key but Will Not Start: ESL Fault

If your Freelander 2 detects the key fob fine but still refuses to start, this points straight to the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL). It is a well-known and very common fault on the Freelander 2.

Symptoms usually go like this:

  • Key is detected with no “Smart Key Not Found” warning
  • Dashboard lights up normally
  • You press Start and nothing happens
  • Sometimes there is a clicking or grinding noise from the steering column
  • The steering wheel may feel locked even with the key present

The ESL jams or fails internally and physically blocks the car from cranking, regardless of whether the key is valid. We reset or replace it and re-sync it with the rest of the system, all done on your driveway.

Start/Stop Button Problems

Sometimes the button itself is the issue. If you have to press Start five or ten times before anything happens, or press at a particular angle, the switch contacts inside the button are worn. This is a common fault on higher-mileage Freelander 2s and is often mistaken for a key or immobiliser problem. Replacing the button resolves it.

Slot Reader Failure on 2006 to 2012 Models

If your Freelander 2 has the slot-in key and it does not click in properly, or the dashboard does not wake up when you insert it, the slot reader on the dashboard has likely failed. This unit reads the key transponder and talks to the immobiliser. When it fails, the car behaves as though no key has been inserted at all.

Before assuming slot reader failure, always replace the CR2032 in the fob and check your 12V battery voltage first, as both can mimic a slot reader fault perfectly. If it is confirmed as a reader failure, swapping the unit sorts it straight away.

Keyless Entry Issues on 2013 to 2015 Freelander 2 Models

The keyless systems on the later models use multiple antennas hidden around the car, in the door handles, under the boot sill and inside the cabin. When one fails, you get specific symptoms:

  • Door handles stop responding, but the key still locks and unlocks using the button
  • You have to hold the key close to the steering column to get the car to start
  • The car does not detect the key inside the cabin
  • Keyless entry works on one door but not others

We test all keyless zones individually and replace only the faulty antenna. No guesswork, no unnecessary parts.

Water-Damaged Freelander 2 Keys

Freelander 2 keys are well known for suffering water damage. It only takes a small amount of moisture getting past the rubber seals, whether from a wet pocket, a rainy day or condensation, and the circuit board starts to corrode. You will often notice intermittent faults first, then complete failure. We repair the PCB where possible or replace the key entirely if the damage is too far gone.

Need a Freelander 2 Spare Key? Highly Recommended

Given how sensitive the Freelander 2 is to battery voltage and sync issues, having a spare key is one of the best things you can do. A spare key protects you from:

  • Lockouts if your only key fails
  • “Smart Key Not Found” being triggered by a single flat battery event
  • Steering lock breakdowns leaving you stranded
  • Immobiliser lockouts after a battery change

We supply and programme Freelander 2 spare keys on the same day, fully tested before we leave.

When to Go to a Dealer Instead

If your Freelander 2 is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, a main dealer is the right first port of call. Outside of warranty, dealers typically charge considerably more for key programming and immobiliser work than a specialist, and the same diagnostic equipment is used either way. We use OEM-standard JLR programming tools, which means the end result is identical at a fraction of the dealer cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common Freelander 2 key fob faults?+
Most Freelander 2 key issues are: (1) flat CR2032 battery, (2) worn flip key hinge causing the blade to detach, (3) transponder chip failure in older 2006–2008 models, (4) lost synchronisation after a car battery replacement.
Why does my Freelander 2 key fob light up but not work?+
If the LED flashes when you press a button but the car does not respond, the fob is transmitting but the car cannot authenticate it. This usually means the key has lost sync — try standing closer and pressing rapidly, or replace the battery.
Can I fix a broken Freelander 2 key fob hinge?+
Replacement fob shells are available for most Freelander 2 key types. AJ Auto can transplant your existing transponder chip into a new shell, saving the cost of full reprogramming.
How much does Freelander 2 key replacement cost?+
Freelander 2 key replacement costs £120–£200 with AJ Auto — one of the more affordable JLR key replacements due to the simpler key technology versus modern models.
Does the Freelander 2 have keyless entry?+
No — the Freelander 2 requires pressing the fob button to lock/unlock. Keyless passive entry was not available on the L359 Freelander 2. If you prefer not to press the button, a remote start system would need to be retrofitted.

When to go to a dealer instead

If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
