Fast Help:

It’s an oddly specific Range Rover quirk: the fob unlocks the doors fine, but the lock button does nothing. The car won’t bleep, the indicators don’t flash, and you walk away with the vehicle unsecured.

Here’s how to diagnose it without a trip to the dealer.

Why Range Rovers Refuse to Lock The Real Reasons

1. A door, bonnet, or boot is not fully closed

Range Rovers won’t arm the alarm or central-lock if any opening sensor reports ‘ajar’. Most often it’s the boot or one of the rear doors not seated properly. Check the dashboard: it should show which one.

2. Faulty door latch micro-switch

The car thinks a door is open even when it’s closed. This is a known issue on L322 and L405 Range Rovers, the latch micro-switch wears out and reports a permanent ajar state.

Quick test: Press hard against the suspect door from the outside while pressing the lock button. If it locks, the latch is the problem.

3. The lock button on the fob is physically dead

Repeated wear can kill the lock button while leaving unlock fine. Sometimes you can feel it, the click is mushy or absent.

Quick test: Try the lock button on your spare key. If the spare locks the car normally, your primary fob’s lock button has failed and the fob needs replacing or repairing.

4. Boot/tailgate alignment

L405 and L494 Range Rovers have a notorious boot alignment issue. Over time the boot droops and the latch doesn’t fully engage. The car still drives, but it won’t lock until the boot is realigned.

5. Dead vehicle battery (yes, again)

If the 12v battery is below ~11.5v, central locking is one of the first systems to fail.

AJ Auto tip: Always check the dashboard warning area first. JLR vehicles tell you which door, bonnet, or boot is reporting open: that one fact saves an hour of diagnosis.

What to Do Next

If you’ve checked all doors are closed, tried the spare fob, and the vehicle battery is healthy: it’s a latch sensor or fob fault. Both are fixable, neither needs main dealer prices.
