Fast Help:
The second generation Range Rover Sport (L494) ran from 2013 to 2022 and is one of the JLR platforms we see most often for spare keys and lost key callouts. Its encrypted security module sits well outside what a general locksmith can handle, which leaves owners with two real options, a main Land Rover dealership or AJ Auto. We cover every model year from 2013 right through to the final 2022 cars, including SDV6, SDV8, P400e PHEV and SVR variants, with mobile technicians who attend your home, office or roadside anywhere in the UK. Same day in the vast majority of cases, with no lock module replacement and no need to send the vehicle to a workshop.
For an L494 spare key or a replacement for a lost or damaged remote, our mobile workshop attends your location with dealer-level JLR diagnostic software and genuine-specification smart key fobs. We pair the new remote cleanly through the security module, confirm keyless entry, push-button start and the alarm all operate correctly, and leave your existing keys fully functional alongside the new one. There is no need to visit a dealer or arrange recovery.
For all-keys-lost situations on the L494 we arrive with everything needed already in the van. We talk directly to the immobiliser, clear the old key memory and programme fresh remotes on site in a single visit. Most L494 attendances are completed in under an hour. All parts and programming carry a 12-month warranty, and the price is fixed and agreed on the phone before we travel.
The L494 Range Rover Sport (2013–2022) uses a smart key system managed through the Body Control Module (BCM) and communicates via the CAN bus network. All key programming must be performed with manufacturer-level JLR diagnostic software — the L494’s security architecture uses encrypted key authentication that generic OBD tools and aftermarket programmers cannot access. Our mobile technicians use genuine JLR SDD or Pathfinder software to write new remotes into the vehicle’s approved key list correctly on the first attempt.
The programming process connects directly to the OBD port, reads the existing BCM security token, authenticates the new fob and updates the approved key list in an encrypted session. For all-keys-lost scenarios we perform a full immobiliser reset, generate new security seeds and programme a complete set of fresh remotes in one visit. The L494 introduced an updated Pivi infotainment system on later models, but the key security architecture remained consistent across the generation, so programming procedure is the same whether your vehicle is a 2013 SDV6 or a 2021 P400e. A spare key job typically takes 15 to 25 minutes; all-keys-lost takes 30 to 45 minutes.
How does Range Rover Sport (L494) key programming work and how long does it take?
The L494 pairs remotes through the BCM using JLR’s encrypted authentication protocol. Our technician connects manufacturer-level diagnostic software to the OBD port, reads the current security token and writes the new key into the approved list. A spare key addition takes around 15 to 25 minutes. An all-keys-lost reset and full reprogram takes 30 to 45 minutes — all done at your location.
Can you programme a key for an L494 plug-in hybrid (P400e)?
Yes. The P400e PHEV variant uses the same BCM-based smart key system as all other L494 models. The hybrid drivetrain does not affect the key security architecture. We carry L494-compatible fobs suitable for all engine variants and the programming procedure is identical regardless of whether the vehicle has a standard or electrified powertrain.
My L494 shows a “Key Not Detected” warning — do I need a full key replacement?
Not necessarily. A Key Not Detected warning on the L494 can be triggered by a failing key battery, a damaged antenna in the door handle or B-pillar, or a corrupted key token in the BCM. We diagnose on site, replace the remote battery if that is the cause, or supply and programme a replacement fob if the hardware has failed. A full BCM reset is only required if all keys are lost or corrupted.
Will programming a spare key affect my existing L494 remotes?
No. Adding a spare key writes it into the existing approved list without modifying or invalidating your current remotes. All previously programmed fobs remain fully active. Only a full security reset in an all-keys-lost scenario would clear the existing list, and in that case all new remotes are programmed together in a single session.
Do you cover the L494 in rural areas and outside cities?
Yes. Our mobile service covers England and South Wales including rural counties, motorway locations and business premises outside city centres. We travel to you regardless of location, and the fixed price agreed on the phone does not change based on distance within our coverage area.
What warranty do you provide on L494 key programming?
All parts and programming work on the L494 carry a 12-month warranty. If a programmed remote fails to operate as expected within the warranty period, we return to site and resolve it at no additional cost. The fixed price quoted includes all labour and parts — there are no separate call-out fees.
We also cover related Sport and Range Rover models. If you need a key for the first-generation Range Rover Sport (L320), the latest Range Rover Sport (L461), or the full-size Range Rover (L405) which shares the same generation platform, our mobile service covers all three alongside the L494.
