Fast Help:
If you’ve owned a Freelander 2 for a while, you probably already know the key fobs on these cars aren’t the most reliable things in the world. We work on these models every day, and nearly all of them eventually have some kind of issue with the key, immobiliser, steering lock or keyless entry. The good news is they’re usually fixable, and most can be sorted on the spot.
This guide isn’t written like a robot or a manual just a straightforward explanation of what happens and how we help.

Depending on the year, your Freelander 2 will have one of these:
Both types can fail in similar ways, mostly because the Freelander 2 is very sensitive to battery voltage.
This one is by far the most common. It happens all the time and usually after something simple like:
The Freelander 2 doesn’t like low voltage, and when it dips, the key, the steering lock and the car’s main control unit can stop communicating properly. When that sync goes, the car won’t start, won’t recognise the key, the remote stops working, or the keyless entry becomes dead.
We fix this by re-syncing everything the key, the BCM, the steering lock so they all talk to each other again.
Super common. You replace the vehicle battery and suddenly the key doesn’t respond anymore. This is nothing you’ve done wrong it’s just another Freelander 2 trait. The moment voltage drops, the coding between the key and the car can get confused.
A quick immobiliser re-sync sorts it.
This usually isn’t anything major. It’s normally one of these:
We repair the key or replace it if needed.
This points straight to the steering lock (ESL). Very common on Freelander 2.
Symptoms usually go like this:
The ESL jams or fails internally and blocks the car from cranking.
We reset or replace the ESL and re-sync everything job done.
Sometimes the button itself is worn. If you press Start and nothing happens unless you press it five times, the microswitch inside is probably on its way out. We replace these regularly.
If your Freelander 2 has the slot key and it doesn’t “click in” or the dash doesn’t wake up, the reader unit is often the culprit. The contacts wear out and the car won’t know the key is inserted.
Replacing the slot reader fixes it instantly.
The keyless systems on these later models have multiple antennas hidden around the car. When one fails, the system goes funny. You’ll notice things like:
We test all the keyless zones and replace only the faulty antenna.
Freelander 2 keys are known to suffer water damage. It only takes a bit of moisture, and the circuit board can corrode. This leads to random behaviour sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
We repair the PCB or replace the key if it’s too far gone.
If you’ve lost all keys, don’t panic. We deal with this daily, and you don’t need to tow the car anywhere.
