Fast Help:
The fourth generation Range Rover (L405) ran from 2012 to 2022 and was the first all aluminium Range Rover, with a fully encrypted JLR security platform that simply does not respond to anything outside of authorised Land Rover diagnostic kit. The two routes that genuinely produce a working key are a main dealer or AJ Auto. We cover every L405 model year from 2012 to 2022, including SDV6, SDV8, P400e PHEV, supercharged petrol and SVAutobiography variants, attending your home, office or roadside anywhere in the UK. Same day service in the vast majority of jobs, with no lock module replacement and no need to send the vehicle to a workshop.
For an L405 spare key or a replacement for a lost or damaged remote, our mobile workshop attends your location with manufacturer-level JLR diagnostic tools and genuine-specification L405 smart key hardware. We programme the new remote directly to the Key Vehicle Module on site, confirm all keyless entry, push-button start and alarm functions operate correctly, and leave your existing keys fully active alongside the new one. There is no need for a dealer visit or vehicle recovery.
For all-keys-lost situations on the L405 we carry full KVM reset capability in the van. We clear the existing key memory, perform a fresh security initialisation and programme new remotes in a single visit. Most L405 jobs are wrapped up in under an hour. Parts and programming carry a 12-month warranty and the price is fixed and agreed before we travel.
The L405 Range Rover (2012–2021) uses a Key Vehicle Module (KVM) to manage all smart key pairing and authentication. Every new remote must be written into the KVM using manufacturer-level JLR diagnostic software — the KVM uses encrypted authentication that is completely inaccessible to generic OBD programmers and aftermarket key tools. L405 key programming requires a technician with active JLR SDD or Pathfinder software access and the correct hardware interface.
Our technicians connect to the L405’s OBD port with a genuine JLR diagnostic interface, communicate directly with the KVM and write the new remote into the approved key list in an encrypted session. For all-keys-lost scenarios we carry out a full KVM reset, generate new security credentials and programme a complete set of fresh remotes. Later L405 models from 2018 onwards featured optional Pivi Pro and updated KVM firmware — our Pathfinder subscriptions cover all L405 build years and firmware revisions. Spare key programming takes 15 to 25 minutes; all-keys-lost takes 30 to 50 minutes.
How does Range Rover (L405) key programming work and how long does it take?
The L405 uses a Key Vehicle Module that requires JLR SDD or Pathfinder to authenticate and write new remotes. Our technician connects to the OBD port, communicates with the KVM and adds the new key to the approved list in an encrypted session. A spare key takes 15 to 25 minutes; an all-keys-lost KVM reset and reprogram takes 30 to 50 minutes — all done at your location.
Can you programme a key for an L405 plug-in hybrid (P400e)?
Yes. The L405 PHEV uses the same KVM-based smart key system as all other L405 variants. The hybrid drivetrain and high-voltage battery system do not affect the key security architecture. We carry L405 fobs suitable for all engine specifications including the PHEV and programme them using the same Pathfinder-based procedure.
My L405 key fob is working but the keyless entry has stopped responding — is this a key fault?
Not necessarily. On the L405, keyless entry failure while push-button start still works often points to a door handle antenna fault, a low key battery affecting the passive entry range, or an antenna module issue rather than a key programming problem. We diagnose on site, test the fob at the OBD port to confirm the key is transmitting correctly, and identify whether the fault is in the remote, the antenna or the KVM.
Will programming a spare key affect my L405’s existing remotes?
No. Adding a spare writes the new remote into the KVM’s approved list without modifying or invalidating your current keys. All existing fobs remain fully functional. Only a full KVM reset in an all-keys-lost scenario would clear the approved list, and in that case all new remotes are programmed together in a single session so you leave with a complete working set.
Do you cover L405 callouts outside major cities?
Yes. Our mobile service covers England and South Wales, including rural locations, motorway breakdown points and business premises far from city centres. The fixed price agreed by phone does not vary based on distance within our coverage area — you pay the same whether you are in central London or a rural location in Wales.
What warranty do you provide on L405 key programming?
All parts and programming carry a 12-month warranty. If a remote or KVM pairing fails within the warranty period, we return to site at no charge. The fixed price quoted by phone includes all labour and hardware with no hidden fees.
We also cover the other Range Rover generations. If you need a key for the classic Range Rover (L322) or the latest Range Rover (L460), or the same-generation Range Rover Sport (L494), our mobile service covers all three alongside the L405.

If your Range Rover L405 is showing a ‘Smart Key Deactivated’ message, or the smart key fob has stopped being recognised, this is a known issue across the 2013–2021 generation. The warning typically appears after a flat key battery, a dealer software update, or a KVM (Key Verification Module) fault losing its encrypted pairing with the fob.
AJ Auto visits your location across the UK to diagnose the root cause of the smart key deactivated Range Rover fault and re-pair or replace the key on-site — same-day, no towing, no dealer wait times. We carry L405-compatible smart keys in stock.
