If you’re getting a Land Rover or Range Rover key replaced, you’ll likely be offered two paths: clone your existing key or program a new key from scratch. They look identical to use, but the differences matter.
Here’s how to choose.

What Cloning Actually Means
Cloning copies the existing transponder data from a working key onto a new blank. The car can’t tell the new key apart from the original: they’re functionally identical from the immobiliser’s perspective.
Cloning requires a working primary key. No primary, no clone.
What ‘New OEM Programming’ Means
A blank key is paired to the vehicle’s BCM as a brand-new authorised key. The car generates a fresh cryptographic identity for that key. The old keys remain valid (unless you specifically delete them).
This is the path you take when you’ve lost a key and only have one left, or when you want to add a brand-new spare while keeping the original.
Cloned Keys: Pros and Cons
Pros
- Cheaper, typically £150-£200 vs £280+ for OEM programming
- Faster , 15-20 minutes
- Works on older models (pre-2010) where new programming is harder
Cons
- Both keys share the same identity, if one is stolen, the other can’t be ‘deleted’ separately
- Cannot be done remotely without the original key in hand
- If your original key is faulty, you’re cloning a fault
OEM Programming: Pros and Cons
Pros
- Each key has a unique identity, keys can be individually deleted if lost or stolen
- Doesn’t require the original key to be working
- Better long-term security
- Works on all model years
Cons
- More expensive
- Requires OBD access for 30-60 minutes
- Not all aftermarket keys are compatible: you need quality blanks
AJ Auto tip: Got the car second-hand with two keys, but worried one’s been duplicated by a previous owner? Have a specialist DELETE all paired keys via BCM and program two fresh keys. Costs around £350-£450 and resets your security to factory state.
Quick Decision Guide
- Have one working key, want a spare, on a budget? → Cloning
- Lost a key and worried about security? → OEM programming + delete the lost key from BCM
- Just bought the car second-hand? → OEM programming, delete all old keys
- Pre-2010 model? → Cloning is usually the practical option
- 2018+ model with high-value vehicle? → OEM programming for the better security audit trail
What We Recommend
For high-value or recent JLR vehicles (2018+), we lean toward OEM programming. The few hundred pounds extra buys a clean security state and the ability to remotely delete keys if lost. For older or daily-driver models with two existing keys, cloning is the sensible choice.
