Range Rover L405 KVM Module Failure: Symptoms, Causes & Replacement

The KVM (Keyless Vehicle Module) is the brain of the L405 Range Rover’s keyless entry and start system. When it fails — and it does fail more often than JLR would like — the symptoms can be confusing and expensive at a main dealer.

What the KVM Actually Does

The KVM is the gateway between your fob, the immobiliser, the door antennas, and the engine ECU. Every keyless entry, push-button start, and remote-lock command on the L405 routes through this module. When it dies, the car may be perfectly drivable mechanically but completely unable to be started or secured.

Six Symptoms of a Failing KVM on Range Rover L405

1. Intermittent ‘No Key Detected’ warnings

The fob works one moment, fails the next. No pattern. This is usually the first sign.

2. Doors lock and unlock randomly

Driving down the motorway and your doors auto-lock without a command. Or you walk away from the car and it doesn’t lock at all.

3. Engine cranks but won’t start

The starter motor turns but the immobiliser blocks the engine. Diagnostics show codes related to immobiliser communication failure.

4. Battery drain overnight

A failing KVM doesn’t go to sleep properly, draining the 12v battery in 24-48 hours.

5. Boot won’t release

The boot release on L405 is wired through the KVM. When the module is on its way out, the boot becomes intermittent.

6. Multiple unrelated dashboard warnings

Because the KVM talks to so many other modules, a fault can cascade — you might see ABS, traction control, and parking sensor warnings simultaneously.
