A Range Rover with no working keys is a very specific problem. It cannot be started, probably cannot be unlocked from outside, and the standard advice to call a locksmith or the breakdown service does not account for the fact that JLR key programming requires specialist equipment that most locksmiths and breakdown operators do not carry.
Why Range Rover AKL Is a Specialist Job
Range Rovers from 2013 onwards use a Key Vehicle Module to authenticate every key. Losing all keys does not simply mean cutting a new blank. The KVM stores the cryptographic profile of every key ever programmed to the vehicle. When all keys are gone, the entire key matrix must be cleared and rebuilt before a new key will be accepted. That process requires JLR Pathfinder or SDD. No other tooling can replicate it.
The Process on the Day
On arrival we check proof of ownership — this is a legal requirement and is not skipped for any reason. We then gain access using whatever physical entry option is available. The Range Rover has a backup entry procedure using the emergency blade concealed in most smart key fobs. With the OBD port accessible, we connect to Pathfinder, clear the key matrix, and programme a new key. We test fully before leaving: unlock, lock, start, and a complete proximity entry cycle. Total time on site is 60 to 90 minutes.
What It Costs
| Service | AJ Auto Price | Main Dealer Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Range Rover spare key | From £180 | £400 to £900+ |
| Range Rover all keys lost | From £250 | £700 to £1,500+ plus recovery |
Additional keys at the same visit are discounted. We recommend having at least two keys programmed at the all-keys-lost appointment. For full pricing see our Range Rover key replacement cost page.
JLR KEY SPECIALIST
Need a JLR key sorted today?
Same day Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar key replacement across London, England and South Wales. Trade accounts welcome.
What to Have Ready
V5C registration document, photo ID, and the vehicle accessible to a mobile technician. If the V5C is locked inside, a DVLA online enquiry printout alongside insurance documents in your name and photo ID is acceptable.
Can Recovery Be Avoided?
Yes. We attend your location and complete the entire job on site. A dealer cannot do this — you have to deliver the vehicle to them, adding recovery costs on top of the key replacement.
After the Job
Once new keys are programmed, every previous key profile no longer exists in the KVM. Lost keys found later, or keys held by a previous owner, are permanently disabled. We strongly recommend two keys at the same appointment. See our Range Rover spare key page and the Range Rover key replacement page for further detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does an all-keys-lost job cost more than a spare key?
A spare key addition uses the existing key matrix and simply adds a new profile. An all-keys-lost job requires clearing the entire KVM matrix first, rebuilding it from scratch, and then programming the new key — a significantly more involved process.
Can the all-keys-lost job be done if the Range Rover is locked?
Yes. We gain access using the vehicle’s backup entry procedure or non-destructive methods before connecting to the OBD port. The vehicle does not need to be unlocked in advance.
What happens to old keys after a KVM clear?
Every previously registered key profile is permanently deleted. This includes any lost, stolen, or unknown keys. Old keys found later will not work on the vehicle.
Do you need to take the vehicle away?
No. The entire job is completed on site at your home, workplace, or roadside location. The vehicle stays with you throughout.

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
