The Emergency Blade in Your Land Rover Key
All current Land Rover smart key fobs contain an emergency blade. Even with a completely dead fob battery, this blade unlocks the driver’s door via a concealed barrel. On Discovery 5 and Defender models the barrel is behind a small cap on the door edge. On Discovery Sport and older models the location varies — check your owner’s manual. Once inside, hold the dead fob against the start button. The button contains a short-range reader that activates the transponder in the fob directly, allowing the engine to start even without fob battery power.
If the Key Is Locked Inside
A JLR specialist uses non-destructive access methods to enter the vehicle without damage. The correct tools and technique for a Land Rover differ from other vehicles. We gain entry, recover the keys, and the vehicle starts normally if the key itself is undamaged.
If the Key Is Lost or Non-Functional
