A Land Rover with a key not detected warning at the wrong time — parked at an unfamiliar location, late at night, away from home — is a stressful situation. This is the exact procedure we follow on an emergency callout to resolve it.
Before We Arrive: What You Can Try
Replace the key fob battery if you have a spare CR2032 to hand. If the fob battery is the cause, a fresh battery will clear the warning immediately and you will not need us. The emergency blade in the key can also open the driver’s door physically if the passive entry has failed. Once inside, hold the fob against the start button — the button’s inductive reader can power the fob’s transponder directly without needing battery power, which may allow the engine to start even with a dead battery.
When We Arrive
We confirm the fault is not simply a dead fob battery before connecting any diagnostic equipment. If a fresh battery does not resolve it, we connect Pathfinder to the OBD port and read the KVM directly. The diagnostic report tells us: whether the key is still registered in the KVM, whether the key profile has been deactivated, whether there is a KVM module fault, and whether the 12V battery is supplying sufficient voltage to the proximity system.
What We Find Most Often
In our experience on emergency callouts, the causes in order of frequency are: a dead fob battery (resolved on site with a battery from our kit), a low vehicle 12V battery (resolved with jump support), a deactivated key profile (resolved via Pathfinder reactivation), and in a small number of cases, a key that has been physically damaged. Genuine KVM hardware faults are the least common cause.

Getting Home Safely
Our priority on any emergency callout is getting you mobile as quickly as possible. Once the immediate fault is resolved, we advise on whether any follow-up work is needed: a spare key, a KVM health check, or a 12V battery replacement. For the full Land Rover key service see our Land Rover key replacement page. For all-keys-lost situations see our JLR all keys lost page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common cause of emergency Land Rover key callouts?
In our experience, the most frequent cause is a dead or very low fob battery that the owner did not notice before it stopped working entirely. The second most common is a low 12V vehicle battery on a car that has been standing unused.
Can you attend a roadside location?
Yes. We attend roadsides, car parks, driveways, and any accessible location. If you are on a live road with safety concerns, let us know and we will advise on any precautions.
Is there an additional charge for emergency or out-of-hours callouts?
Call us to confirm current availability and any out-of-hours considerations. Most callouts within normal hours are covered by the standard pricing.
What if the fault cannot be resolved on the day?
If a hardware fault is identified that requires a part we are not carrying, we advise honestly on the same day and arrange a return visit when the part is available.

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
