A ‘key not recognised’ or ‘key not detected’ message on a Jaguar dashboard is unsettling but almost always has a straightforward cause. After attending dozens of these callouts across the UK, here are the six most common reasons and what actually resolves each one.
1. Key Fob Battery Low or Dead
The most frequent cause. A PEPS smart fob transmits a low-frequency signal continuously when it detects it is near the vehicle. As the CR2032 battery depletes, the signal range shortens and then disappears. Replace the battery. On most current Jaguar fobs the battery slot is accessed by removing the emergency blade and pressing the release tab on the rear of the fob.
2. Signal Interference
Certain locations — multi-storey car parks, near radio masts, or close to high-voltage equipment — can interfere with the 433 MHz signal that Jaguar PEPS keys use. If the not-recognised message appeared in a specific location but the key worked elsewhere immediately before and after, signal interference is likely. This is not a fault with the key or the vehicle.
3. 12V Battery Low — Especially on I-PACE
On the Jaguar I-PACE, all key detection circuits run on the 12V auxiliary battery. A low 12V will cause key not recognised messages even with a fully charged main traction battery. On petrol and diesel Jaguars, a low 12V vehicle battery can also cause intermittent key recognition faults because the KVM draws from the vehicle battery. If the not-recognised message appeared after the car had been standing for several weeks, check both the fob battery and the 12V vehicle battery.
4. Key Deactivated in the KVM
If the KVM has received too many failed authentication attempts from a key, or if a software update introduced a conflict, the key can be deactivated. The dashboard message for this is usually more specific than a generic not-recognised warning. Resolution requires a Pathfinder diagnostic session to read the KVM status and reactivate or reprogram the affected key.
5. Water Damage to the Key Fob
Water ingress through a cracked case, a dropped key, or a washing machine incident can damage the internal PCB or antenna of the fob. The key may appear physically intact but have a non-functional antenna circuit. External visual inspection rarely identifies this. If the fob is dry, fresh battery fitted, and still not recognised, test with any available second key. If a second key works normally, the original fob has internal damage and needs replacing.
6. KVM Issue
Less common but it does happen: the KVM module develops a fault that causes it to reject keys that were previously registered and working. Symptoms include multiple keys failing simultaneously or a key not recognised message appearing after a recent software update. This requires Pathfinder diagnostics to read the KVM directly.
| Service | AJ Auto Price | Main Dealer Estimate |

What to Do First
Replace the fob battery. If that does not resolve it and the not-recognised message persists, call a JLR specialist rather than attempting anything else. Unprofessional attempts to reset or reprogram a JLR KVM can cause additional faults. We carry out a Pathfinder diagnostic check at every callout to confirm the cause before any work begins. See our Jaguar key not detected page and the Jaguar key replacement page for more detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can signal interference permanently damage my Jaguar key?
No. Signal interference causes a temporary failure to communicate. Once the interference source is removed or the vehicle is moved to a different location, the key should function normally.
What does it mean if only passive entry stops working but button presses still work?
This is usually the earliest sign of a low fob battery. Passive entry requires a stronger continuous signal than a button press. Replace the battery.
My Jaguar key was deactivated after an update. Does it need replacing?
Not necessarily. A deactivated key profile can often be reactivated via a Pathfinder session without replacing the key. We carry out a diagnostic assessment to confirm before any parts are ordered.
Can I check the KVM status myself?
No. Reading KVM data requires Pathfinder or SDD. There is no owner-accessible diagnostic port or procedure for checking key system status on current Jaguar models.

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
