Fast Help:

Jaguar smart keys come in two main architectures on current and recent models: PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start) and UWB (Ultra-Wideband). Both give you keyless entry and push-button start. The difference is in how precisely the vehicle knows where the key is, which has practical implications for both security and everyday use.

How PEPS Works

PEPS uses low-frequency antenna fields broadcast around the vehicle’s door handles and boot. When the key enters the field and responds with a valid signal, the vehicle unlocks. The detection zone is approximately one to two metres from each antenna. It is a proven, reliable system that has been standard on JLR vehicles since 2013.

How UWB Works

UWB adds a second layer of location detection using the 6 to 8.5 GHz band and Time of Flight measurement. The vehicle times how long a UWB pulse takes to travel from the vehicle’s antenna to the key and back. Speed of light is a constant, so this gives a centimetre-accurate distance measurement. If the key is within the correct physical zone, entry is permitted. If the signal has been amplified or relayed, the ToF calculation reveals the discrepancy.

Day-to-Day Differences for Owners

For most day-to-day use, PEPS and UWB feel identical. Both give you walk-up-and-open entry and push-button start. The UWB system occasionally rejects the key if it is in a position very close to the boundary of the detection zone, which a small number of owners find briefly confusing. The security benefit of UWB is meaningful; the user experience difference is minimal.

Key Programming — Is It Different?

Programming a UWB key requires a Pathfinder session with UWB-specific parameters and a UWB-capable key blank. The process is not fundamentally different from programming a PEPS key but it uses different adaptation steps. We carry both UWB and PEPS blanks for Jaguar models and confirm the specification at booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PEPS stand for and how does it differ from UWB?

PEPS stands for Passive Entry Passive Start. It uses low-frequency radio signals to detect the key within roughly one to two metres. UWB uses high-frequency radio to measure the precise location of the key to within centimetres, making it both more reliable and significantly harder to relay attack.

Can I tell from outside the car whether my Jaguar has PEPS or UWB?

Not by looking at the exterior. The most reliable way is to check the vehicle specification sheet or call 07726 709961 with your VIN. UWB-equipped vehicles are typically identified in the options list.

Is PEPS an older or less capable system?

PEPS is mature technology that works reliably on the vast majority of vehicles. Its main limitation compared to UWB is vulnerability to relay amplification attacks. For security-conscious owners in high-theft areas, UWB provides a meaningful upgrade.

If my PEPS-equipped Jaguar key needs replacing, do I have to stay with PEPS?

Yes. Replacement keys must match the system the vehicle was built with. You cannot replace a PEPS key with a UWB key on a vehicle that does not have the UWB antenna hardware installed.

When to go to a dealer instead

If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
