Fast Help:

The Jaguar F-PACE received a significant mid-cycle facelift for the 2021 model year. Most of the changes were to the exterior styling, interior materials, and infotainment system. Less discussed is the fact that the key fob design also changed, and with it the programming parameters in Pathfinder. For anyone doing F-PACE key work, this distinction matters.

What Changed on the Facelift Key

The pre-facelift F-PACE X761 (2016 to 2020) used a first-generation JLR PEPS smart key. The post-facelift F-PACE (2021 onwards) uses an updated fob design with revised internal electronics. The physical shape of the fob changed slightly — the post-facelift fob has a more refined finish matching the updated interior styling. More importantly, the internal antenna configuration and the chip variant differ between the two generations.

Why This Matters for Key Programming

In Pathfinder, the F-PACE entry for 2021 and later models uses different adaptation parameters from the pre-2021 entry. If the wrong blank is used, the programming session will complete but the key will either fail authentication or have intermittent detection issues — typically flagging as detected in some proximity zones but not others. This is not immediately obvious on the day and may only present as a problem when the owner tries passive boot release or remote start features.

A blank sourced for a 2019 F-PACE and programmed with 2019 parameters will not function correctly on a 2022 model. The reverse is also true. We carry both variants and confirm model year via VIN at every booking.

The P400e Adds Another Layer

The F-PACE P400e plug-in hybrid has the same key system as its equivalent model year standard F-PACE. The hybrid powertrain does not introduce any additional key complexity. However, the P400e has a slightly different OBD port location and requires battery support during programming to account for the hybrid system’s 12V management behaviour. This is something we deal with routinely on P400e callouts.

Which Year Is Your F-PACE?

If you are unsure which generation your F-PACE is, check the registration plate. 2020 or earlier is pre-facelift. 2021 onwards is the updated model. The easiest visual check is the infotainment screen: the post-facelift model has the Pivi Pro system with a curved screen profile. Frequently Asked Questions

What changed about the F-PACE key system in the 2020 facelift?

The post-2020 F-PACE introduced a new generation InControl system with updated proximity key architecture. This means the programming process, diagnostic access route and in some cases the key hardware differ from pre-facelift X761 models.

Can a pre-2020 F-PACE key be used on a post-2020 model?

No. The keys are not interchangeable between pre and post-facelift generations. Each key must be purchased and programmed specifically for the generation it will be used on.

How do I know if my F-PACE is pre or post 2020 facelift?

The 2020 facelift introduced a revised front grille, new interior with a curved touchscreen, and updated ambient lighting. If your car has the older horizontal screen layout and original grille, it is pre-facelift. The VIN and build date on the V5C will confirm the production year.

Is the P400e plug-in hybrid covered for key replacement?

Yes. The P400e uses the same key architecture as the standard F-PACE for its year. The hybrid system does not affect key programming.

When to go to a dealer instead

If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
