The Land Rover Discovery Sport is one of the UK’s best-selling SUVs and it comes up regularly in our callout log. Families use them hard, and with multiple drivers, keys occasionally disappear entirely. This is an honest account of what happens at a Discovery Sport all-keys-lost callout.
The Discovery Sport Key System
The Discovery Sport L550 (2015 onwards) uses the KVM-based security architecture common across the current JLR range. Losing all keys requires clearing the entire KVM key matrix and rebuilding it from scratch. No standard locksmith equipment can access the Discovery Sport KVM. Both SDD and Pathfinder support this model depending on year, and we carry both.
What We Do on Arrival
We confirm ownership documents first: V5C or lease agreement plus photo ID. This is non-negotiable on any all-keys-lost job. We then gain access using non-destructive methods. The Discovery Sport has the standard JLR backup entry procedure; on vehicles with a completely dead 12V battery we use alternative access. With the OBD port accessible, we connect to Pathfinder, read the KVM, clear the key matrix, and programme a new key. Testing covers unlock, lock, start, and passive entry before we leave.
How Long Does It Take?
A Discovery Sport AKL job takes 60 to 75 minutes in most cases. If the 12V battery is low, add 10 to 15 minutes for battery support. We carry a battery support unit on every callout.
What It Costs
| Service | AJ Auto Price | Main Dealer Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery Sport spare key | From £180 | £400 to £900+ |
| Discovery Sport all keys lost | From £250 | £700 to £1,500+ |
Additional keys at the same visit are discounted. We recommend having two keys programmed at the same appointment. For full Land Rover pricing see our Land Rover key replacement cost page.
Programme Two Keys Before You Leave
Every all-keys-lost job is an opportunity to ensure you never have this situation again. Two keys at the same appointment costs significantly less than two separate callouts. For full Discovery Sport key services including spare key, see our Discovery Sport key replacement page and the Land Rover key replacement page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Discovery Sport AKL be done if the vehicle has a low 12V battery?
Yes. We bring a battery support unit to every callout. If the 12V is below threshold, we connect support before beginning any Pathfinder session.
How many keys should I have programmed at the all-keys-lost appointment?
We recommend two. Programming the second key at the same visit is significantly cheaper than a separate call-out later, and it immediately gives you a spare.
Will the Discovery Sport need a service after the AKL job?
No. Key programming does not affect the vehicle’s service schedule or any other system. The vehicle is ready to drive normally as soon as the new keys are confirmed working.
Does the Discovery Sport AKL process take longer than other Land Rovers?
No. The process is the same as on the Defender L663 and Discovery 5, taking 60 to 75 minutes in most cases.
What We See in Practice
Discovery Sport all keys lost callouts follow a consistent pattern in our experience. The vehicle is often at the owner’s home rather than on a roadside, because the absence of keys is usually discovered in the morning. The job proceeds through non-destructive entry, a security module clear, and fresh key programming, typically within 60 to 90 minutes. The most common complication we encounter on L550 Discovery Sports is a weak 12V battery, which this model is more susceptible to than some other JLR models due to the stop-start system drawing more heavily on the auxiliary battery.

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
