Your First Steps After Losing Your Velar Keys
1. Check thoroughly before doing anything else
Before calling anyone, do a proper search. Coat pockets, bags, down the back of sofas, on hooks you rarely use. A significant number of “lost” keys turn up within the hour. Worth the five minutes before committing to a replacement job.
2. Work out whether you have a spare
If you have any other working Velar key, your situation is much simpler. We can add a new key to the car while you still have one working, which is a quicker and more straightforward job than an all-keys-lost replacement. Find that spare if it exists.
3. If you have no working keys, secure the vehicle
If you’re in a public place with a Velar you can’t lock, don’t leave it unattended. Range Rover Velars are high-value vehicles and a target for opportunists. Stay with it or arrange cover while you sort the replacement.
4. Call a JLR specialist who comes to you
Give us your registration and VIN if you have it, along with your location. We’ll confirm we can attend and tell you what to expect. No need to arrange a recovery truck or get the car to a garage.
How the Replacement Process Works
For a Range Rover Velar (L560, 2017 onwards) with all keys lost, the on-site process typically takes 60 to 90 minutes:
- We arrive with professional mobile programming equipment and a blank Velar key already cut to your vehicle’s VIN
- OBD diagnostic establishes secure communication with the Body Control Module (BCM)
- The new key is paired to the BCM as a freshly authorised key
- If requested, all previously paired keys including the lost ones are deleted from the BCM
- The new key is fully tested: locking, unlocking, boot release, panic alarm, and engine start
- You’re back on the road with a working key and full security
The BCM Security Reset: Why It Matters
When a Velar key goes missing, you don’t just need a replacement key. You need the lost key removed from the vehicle’s memory.
The BCM keeps a register of every key that’s ever been paired to the car. If your lost key is still in that register and someone finds it, they can potentially use it. Deleting the lost keys from the BCM ensures they no longer work, regardless of who has them.
We include this as standard for all lost-key situations. It adds a few minutes to the job and makes a meaningful difference to your security.
AJ Auto note: Always ask any locksmith or specialist whether they’re deleting the lost keys from the BCM, not just adding a new one. Adding without deleting leaves a security gap most owners don’t know about.

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
