How quickly can you replace a Range Rover Evoque (L538) key on site?

Does the L538 Convertible use the same key as the standard Evoque, or is it different?
The L538 Convertible launched in 2016 uses the same smart key system and the same fob hardware as the equivalent year fixed roof Evoque. Programming is identical regardless of body style, so a convertible callout takes the same time as a hardtop L538 and we carry stock for both in the van.
Can you attend an L538 callout in the evening or at weekends?
Yes. We attend L538 emergency callouts including evenings and weekends right across the UK, particularly for all keys lost situations where the car is stranded. Holding off until Monday for a dealer slot is rarely necessary, and we keep stock loaded in the van so we can usually finish the job within hours of the call coming in.
My L538 fob is acting up after years of service, can the existing fob be sorted out or is a replacement the right move?
Smart keys have an effective service life of around 8 years, and most L538s on the road today are now well past that mark. Internal electronics typically start to fail intermittently from year 9 or 10 onwards regardless of how the fob has been looked after, so attempting a repair almost always leads to the same fault returning within months. Our policy on the L538 is to supply a fresh genuine virgin remote rather than try and rescue an end of life fob, paired on site with a 12 month parts and labour warranty.
My L538 is older now, is paying a dealer for a security module replacement really worth it?
In our experience the answer is rarely yes on an older L538. We routinely attend Evoques where a Land Rover dealer has written the job up as a locked module needing replacement, only to finish the key programming on the same visit using specialist JLR tooling and leaving the original module in place. Genuine module failure on an L538 is uncommon, and on an older car a specialist second opinion can save unnecessary expense before any module work is committed to.
