Fast Help:

Range Rover key types have changed significantly over the last twenty years. If you own a Range Rover and are enquiring about key replacement, knowing which type your vehicle uses helps ensure you get the right service and the right blank first time.

Conventional Flip Remote Key — L322 and Older

Range Rover L322 models (2002 to 2012) used a conventional flip remote key. The key fob contains a folding blade for physical door entry, a remote locking transmitter, and an immobiliser transponder embedded in the key head. Programming required JLR SDD connected to the vehicle. No passive entry on most L322 variants — locking and unlocking required button presses.

PEPS Smart Key — L405, L494, L551, Velar

From 2013, the Range Rover L405 and Range Rover Sport L494 introduced PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start). The smart key fob transmits continuously when near the vehicle, allowing walk-up unlocking without pressing any button and engine starting with the push button. The KVM replaced the BCM as the primary key authentication module. This architecture is shared across the L405, L494, L551 Evoque, and Velar.

UWB Smart Key — L460, L461

The fifth-generation Range Rover L460 (2022) and third-generation Range Rover Sport L461 (2022) introduced Ultra-Wideband key detection. The UWB key looks similar to the PEPS smart key externally but contains additional UWB antenna hardware inside. Programming requires UWB-specific Pathfinder parameters and UWB-compatible blanks. The relay attack resistance of UWB is substantially better than PEPS.

Digital Key — L460, L461, Defender L663

Some current JLR models offer a digital key function via a compatible smartphone. This is an additional feature layered on top of the physical key system and does not replace the physical key for KVM purposes. A spare physical key is still the correct backup.

What We See in Practice

The variety of key types across the Range Rover range creates more confusion than any other single topic in our initial enquiries. Owners who have upgraded from an L322 to an L405, or from an L405 to an L460, frequently expect the key process to be the same because they associate it with the same brand. The contrast between a 2005 L322 flip remote and a 2024 L460 UWB smart fob is significant in terms of both hardware and programming complexity. We try to set clear expectations from the first conversation, because an owner expecting to pay an L322 price for L460 key work will be surprised, and explaining the architectural difference upfront makes for a more straightforward booking process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which key type my Range Rover has?

Check the vehicle handbook or the key itself. A flip key has a physical blade that folds into the fob. A smart fob has no blade and is used purely for proximity and remote entry. If unsure, the build sheet or a diagnostic check will confirm the system.

Are all Range Rover key fobs interchangeable between models?

No. Key fobs are specific to the model and generation they were built for. An L405 fob will not programme to an L322, and a Sport L494 fob is not interchangeable with a full-size Range Rover L405 fob even though both are recent models.

Can a Range Rover be ordered with a physical blade key instead of a smart fob?

Not on current generation models. Physical blade keys were phased out in favour of smart fob and card key systems. Older models prior to approximately 2010 used flip-blade remotes.

Does the key type affect how long the replacement process takes?

Broadly, more sophisticated key types such as UWB take slightly longer than basic remotes, but the difference is small in practice. Most key replacements regardless of type are completed within one hour on site.

When to go to a dealer instead

If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
