Fast Help:

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) key technology has been introduced across the JLR range on newer platforms. If you own an older Jaguar or are considering a newer model, here is a plain explanation of what UWB actually changes.

PEPS vs UWB: The Practical Difference

Standard PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start) uses 125 kHz low-frequency antenna fields around the door handles and a 433 MHz response signal from the key fob. The system can detect whether a key is within approximately one metre of each antenna zone. The precision is sufficient for most use cases but creates a vulnerability to relay attack because signal amplification can extend the effective range of the key without the system being able to distinguish a genuine close-proximity key from an amplified one from further away.

UWB uses the 6 to 8.5 GHz band and Time of Flight (ToF) measurement to calculate the physical distance between the key and the antenna to centimetre precision. An amplified relay signal cannot fool a ToF measurement because the amplification introduces latency that the UWB system detects as a distance discrepancy. The key must physically be within the detection zone, not just have its signal forwarded.

Which Jaguar Models Have UWB?

UWB is available on the I-PACE on higher specification trims from approximately 2022 onwards and is standard on recent F-PACE top specification models. The E-PACE, XE, XF, XJ, and F-Type do not have UWB. If you are buying a used Jaguar and relay attack resistance is a priority, check the specification sheet for UWB in the key system description.

Can You Upgrade an Existing Jaguar to UWB?

No. UWB requires dedicated hardware in both the key fob and the vehicle’s antenna infrastructure. It cannot be retrofitted to a vehicle that did not leave the factory with it. The only route to UWB on a Jaguar is purchasing a model that has it as standard or as an option.

What We See in Practice

The relay theft situation for Jaguar owners is one where we see a clear pattern in the callouts that follow an attempted or successful theft. The vehicles most frequently targeted are those whose owners have not invested in a faraday pouch or any secondary deterrent. Post-theft callouts where the vehicle was accessed via relay but not taken are particularly instructive: the thief entered and started the car, found a secondary immobiliser or tracker-triggered alert, and abandoned the vehicle nearby. The lesson from those callouts is that multiple layers of deterrence are effective, but the first and most accessible layer is the faraday pouch, which prevents relay amplification entirely and costs less than a single callout fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Jaguar models have UWB key technology?

UWB was introduced on later model year Jaguars as a security upgrade. The specific models and years vary by specification. Contact 07726 709961 to confirm whether your particular vehicle is equipped with UWB or the earlier PEPS system.

Is UWB key replacement more expensive than PEPS key replacement?

The key hardware for UWB-equipped models is different from earlier PEPS fobs and is currently at a higher price point. The programming process also differs slightly. Call for a model-specific quote.

Can the car be upgraded from PEPS to UWB if my Jaguar was built without it?

Retrofitting UWB is not a straightforward swap because the system requires compatible antenna hardware in the vehicle as well as a UWB-capable key. It is not a standard aftermarket upgrade for most models.

If I lose all keys on a UWB-equipped Jaguar, is recovery possible mobile?

Yes. An all keys lost job on a UWB-equipped Jaguar is handled the same way as any other, using dealer-level diagnostic equipment to clear the key memory and program new UWB fobs on site.

When to go to a dealer instead

If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
