Fast Help:

The RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module appears in Land Rover diagnostic fault codes on the Defender L663 and some other current JLR models. When it shows as a fault, owners are sometimes told they need it replaced. The reality is more nuanced than that.

What the RFA Module Does

The RFA is a small module that handles the remote locking and unlocking actuation signals from the key fob. On models with passive entry it also plays a role in proximity key detection. It communicates with the KVM as part of the overall key authentication chain. On the Defender L663, the RFA is located in the door infrastructure.

RFA Fault Codes — What They Actually Mean

An RFA fault code on Pathfinder or SDD does not automatically mean the module has failed. Common causes of RFA-related fault codes include: a low 12V battery causing communication errors between the RFA and KVM; water ingress into the door area affecting the module’s connection; a software conflict following an OTA update; and a loose or corroded connector at the module itself. Before the module is condemned, the connection, battery voltage, and software state should all be checked.

When the RFA Does Need Replacing

If the module fails to communicate with Pathfinder after all other causes are ruled out, or if the physical module shows evidence of water damage or connector failure that cannot be resolved with contact cleaner and reseating, replacement is warranted. The replacement module requires software configuration via Pathfinder after fitting — it is not a plug-and-play part.

Cost of RFA Diagnosis and Replacement

We carry out RFA diagnostic assessment as part of any key fault callout on the Defender L663. If replacement is needed, we source the correct part and programme it on the same visit where possible. For the full Defender key and module service see our Defender L663 key replacement page.

What We See in Practice

RFA module faults on the Defender L663 are among the more technically interesting jobs we attend, largely because the L663 is still a relatively recent platform and the failure modes are still being characterised through real-world experience. In our attendance at Defender L663 RFA faults, the ratio of software faults to hardware faults has been roughly three to one. The majority of cases have been resolved through a diagnostic clear and module re-initialisation rather than physical replacement. The cases requiring replacement were mostly associated with vehicles that experienced water ingress or an electrical incident. This ratio may change as the fleet ages, but for now most L663 RFA faults are software in nature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RFA module in a Land Rover Defender?

The Remote Function Actuator is the module responsible for processing the remote locking, unlocking, and alarm signals from the key fob. In the L663 Defender it also integrates with the UWB proximity system on higher specification vehicles.

What symptoms indicate an RFA module fault on a Defender?

Typical symptoms include remote locking or unlocking failing while push-button start still works, the car not detecting the key outside the cabin, alarm trigger issues, and diagnostic fault codes pointing to the RFA communication bus.

Can the RFA module be repaired rather than replaced?

In some cases a software reflash or module reset resolves the fault without physical replacement. Hardware failure does occur on the L663 but is less common than software faults on this platform.

Is the RFA fault covered under Defender warranty?

For vehicles within the standard five-year warranty, this is worth claiming through a Land Rover dealer first. Out-of-warranty vehicles may be eligible for goodwill, particularly if the fault is a known pattern for that production batch.

When to go to a dealer instead

If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
