One of the most confusing calls we receive is from an I-PACE owner whose key has stopped working despite the car showing a healthy traction battery charge. The explanation comes down to how the I-PACE distributes power between its two battery systems, and understanding it prevents a lot of unnecessary confusion and expense.

The I-PACE Has Two Separate Batteries

The Jaguar I-PACE uses a large lithium-ion traction battery pack for driving — this is the battery showing charge percentage on the dashboard. It also has a separate 12V lead-acid auxiliary battery, the same type used in any conventional vehicle. These two systems are electrically separate for normal operation. The 12V auxiliary battery powers the low-voltage systems: the KVM, the door handle antennas, the proximity key detection circuits, the interior lighting, and the infotainment system.

Why the 12V Drains on a Parked I-PACE

When the I-PACE is parked, the traction battery does not trickle-charge the 12V auxiliary. The 12V battery powers all of the vehicle’s standby systems continuously, including systems that keep the traction battery management running. On a vehicle that is not being driven regularly, the 12V can deplete over a period of two to four weeks to below the threshold needed for KVM operation. At that point, the key not detected warning appears and passive entry stops working, regardless of whether the traction battery is at 80%.

What Happens When the 12V Is Too Low for Key Programming

If a key programming job is attempted on an I-PACE with a low 12V, the Pathfinder session will begin but the KVM will abort the programming sequence before completion. This leaves the module in an incomplete state. On the next connection attempt, the module may report an error or show the key matrix in a partially cleared state. This is recoverable, but it adds time to the job and in rare cases requires additional diagnostic steps. We carry a battery support unit on every I-PACE callout specifically to avoid this.

How to Check if the 12V Is the Cause

If your I-PACE is showing key not detected after a period of non-use, the first check is the 12V battery. The I-PACE displays 12V battery voltage in the instrument cluster under the battery information screen. Below approximately 12.4V at rest suggests a low 12V. Below 11.5V will typically cause key system faults. Connecting a standard 12V charger or jump pack to the auxiliary battery terminals (under the bonnet) will restore normal operation if the 12V is the cause.

Preventing Recurrence

If the I-PACE is used less than once every two weeks, a trickle charger connected to the 12V auxiliary terminals will prevent the drain. Jaguar recommends this for vehicles in storage. The Phone-as-a-Key app feature does not help in a low-12V situation because the app connects via the vehicle’s cellular module, which also runs on 12V power.
