A dead Jaguar key fob battery does not have to leave you stranded. Every current Jaguar smart key contains a backup entry method that works without battery power, and the engine can usually be started as well. Here is exactly what to do.
Use the Emergency Blade
Remove the emergency blade from your Jaguar fob. On most current models you press a small release button on the back of the fob and the blade slides out. On the F-PACE, E-PACE, I-PACE, XE, XF and F-Type the blade is present and fits the driver’s door barrel. The barrel is typically concealed behind a small cover on the door handle surround or door edge. Check your handbook for the exact location on your model. Insert the blade and turn — the door opens mechanically.
Starting the Engine
Once inside, hold the dead fob against or near the engine start button and press. The start button contains a short-range inductive reader that can power the fob’s internal transponder directly, without needing the fob’s battery. In most cases this works immediately. On some Jaguar models the fob needs to be held at a specific angle or position — the handbook will show this. If the engine starts, drive to your destination and replace the battery at the earliest opportunity.
Replacing the Battery
The battery in most current Jaguar smart keys is a CR2032, available from any supermarket, petrol station, or hardware shop. Remove the blade, press the release tab, and slide the rear cover off. Replace the battery with the correct polarity, reassemble, and test. No reprogramming is needed — the fob reconnects automatically.
What If None of This Works?
If the emergency blade does not fit the door barrel, or the engine will not start via the start button hold, there is a secondary fault. On the I-PACE this is often the 12V auxiliary battery rather than the fob itself. On other models it may be a fob with internal physical damage or a KVM fault. Call a JLR specialist for diagnosis rather than attempting anything further.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a dead Jaguar fob battery cause any permanent damage?
No. A completely dead fob battery does not damage the key’s electronics or its KVM profile. A fresh battery restores all functions.
Can I replace the Jaguar fob battery myself?
Yes. The procedure is simple: remove the blade, press the release tab, swap the CR2032, reassemble. No programming is needed.
The engine starts but the fob battery warning stays on. Is this normal?
The warning clears automatically once the KVM registers a successful authentication cycle from the fob with the new battery. Try locking and unlocking with the fob once or twice after replacing the battery.
How often should the Jaguar fob battery be replaced?
Under normal use, every two to three years. If you regularly leave the key on a table where the proximity antennas can continuously poll it, the battery may drain faster.
What We See in Practice
Key not detected warnings on Range Rover dashboard displays are one of the more varied diagnostic presentations we encounter. The same warning can be caused by a flat fob battery, a KVM communication fault, a 12V battery voltage event, a failed antenna circuit, or interference from an external source. We attend Range Rover key not detected callouts regularly and the most consistent finding is that the cause is not what the owner has assumed. Owners frequently tell us they have already replaced the fob battery, which rules out the most common cause and points toward the vehicle side of the system. Carrying a diagnostic tool to every key not detected callout means we identify the actual cause rather than replacing parts speculatively.

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
