Defender keys being stolen is a situation that requires immediate action, especially on the new L663 where the proximity key can be used to walk up to the vehicle and drive it away. Here is what to do, in order.
Move or Secure the Defender Immediately
If the theft occurred near the vehicle’s usual parking location and the thief knows where it is, move it. A proximity fob works at close range, which means someone with a stolen L663 key could drive the vehicle away within minutes. Move it to a secure location, enable any tracker, and contact the police to log the theft.
The KVM Must Be Cleared
Replacing keys on a Defender without clearing the KVM leaves the stolen key active. The only correct response to a stolen key situation is a full KVM clear and rebuild: every existing key profile is wiped from the module and new keys are programmed from scratch. This is the only way to guarantee the stolen key no longer operates the vehicle. Adding new keys on top of the stolen key profile is not an acceptable security response.
Insurance
Report the theft to your insurer promptly. Key theft cover varies by policy. Some comprehensive policies include it; many do not. Your insurer needs the theft reported before any claim can be considered, and they may require a crime reference number from the police.

Same Day vs Dealer
A JLR dealer will typically require a several-day booking window. We attend the same day in most locations across England and Wales, carry out the KVM clear on site, and programme new keys before leaving. You do not need to leave the vehicle unsecured while waiting for a dealer slot. For the full Defender key service, see our Defender L663 key replacement page and the Land Rover key replacement page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a stolen Defender key situation take to resolve?
Same-day attendance in most locations. On arrival, the KVM clear and rebuild takes 60 to 90 minutes. The entire process from call to completion is typically under three hours.
Should I disable the vehicle’s tracker before calling?
No. Keep the tracker active. If the vehicle is at risk of theft, the tracker provides important protection. We work with the tracker active without any issues.
Does the L663 Defender have any remote security measures?
JLR does not offer remote KVM lockdown through InControl. The only way to disable a stolen key is a physical KVM clear. Once cleared, the stolen key permanently loses access to the vehicle.
What if the theft happened overseas but the car is in the UK?
The process is the same regardless of where the theft occurred. We attend your UK location, clear the KVM, and programme new keys.
What We See in Practice
Defender theft attempts have increased in line with the L663’s growing popularity, and we attend a number of callouts each year specifically for Defenders whose keys have been taken in a targeted theft attempt where the vehicle itself was not stolen. In these situations, the priority is to clear all programmed key data from the KVM and RFA modules before any new keys are enrolled. This prevents stolen keys from being used to access the vehicle subsequently. We carry out this security clear as standard on any key replacement following a reported theft, and recommend owners consider additional physical security measures before returning the vehicle to regular use.

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
