Locking your Range Rover keys inside the vehicle is more common than it sounds. The passive entry system can give a false sense of security — the assumption being that the vehicle will not lock with the key inside. In certain situations, particularly if the fob is in a bag on the back seat, or if the door is manually locked from inside, it can happen. Here is what to do.
Does the Range Rover Lock With the Key Inside?
Modern Range Rovers with PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start) have a ‘key in vehicle’ detection feature that is supposed to prevent locking with the key inside. This works by detecting whether a registered key is in the interior sensing zone when a lock command is received. However, the detection zone has limits. A key in a rucksack in the boot, a key with a very low battery, or a key in a dead spot of the interior antenna coverage can all cause the system to miss the key and allow locking. On older Range Rover models without PEPS, manual locking is always possible regardless of where the key is.
Do Not Attempt to Force Entry
Attempting to force a window or door on a Range Rover causes expensive damage. The bodywork tolerances are tight and the glass is not easily replaceable at short notice. A broken window or damaged lock mechanism adds hundreds of pounds to a situation that should cost a small fraction of that to resolve properly.
Non-Destructive Entry
A JLR specialist with the correct tools can gain physical access to a Range Rover without damage using the backup entry procedures that are part of the vehicle’s design. On smart key models, the emergency blade inside the fob provides one option if any part of the key is accessible. On vehicles where the key is entirely inaccessible inside, we use non-destructive access tooling. The vehicle emerges undamaged.
What Happens After Entry
Once inside, if the keys are recovered intact and the vehicle has no damage to the key system, no further programming is needed. The recovered key starts the vehicle normally. If the key was damaged in some way, or if recovery has been attempted and caused a KVM fault, key work may be needed. We assess this on arrival.
| Service | AJ Auto Price | Main Dealer Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Range Rover spare key | From £180 | £400 to £900+ |
| Range Rover all keys lost | From £250 | £700 to £1,500+ |
If the Key Is Lost as Well as Locked In
If the key was locked inside and then subsequently lost (for example the vehicle was moved by someone else and the key has now gone), you are in an all-keys-lost situation. See our Range Rover all keys lost page for that process. For the full Range Rover key service, visit the Range Rover key replacement page.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Range Rover locked with the key inside. How did this happen?
Modern Range Rovers with PEPS have a key-in-vehicle detection feature, but it has limits. A key in a bag in the boot, a key with a very low battery, or a key in a proximity dead spot can all be missed by the detection system, allowing the vehicle to lock.
Can I unlock a Range Rover without the key?
Using the emergency blade from the key, the driver’s door can be opened mechanically. If the key is locked inside with no accessible part, a JLR specialist with non-destructive entry tools is required.
Will non-destructive entry damage the vehicle?
No. Non-destructive entry uses tools designed for this purpose and leaves no marks on the bodywork, glass, or locking mechanism. The vehicle is undamaged.
If the key is locked inside, does it still need reprogramming?
Usually not. If the key is recovered intact and is undamaged, it starts the vehicle normally. Reprogramming is only needed if the key itself has been damaged or if a KVM fault has developed.

When to go to a dealer instead
If your vehicle is still under JLR factory warranty and the fault is covered, take it to a dealer. Warranty repairs are free and no specialist can match that. If you need a recall fix, the dealer is the right call. Outside of those two situations, a mobile JLR specialist will be faster, cheaper, and will attend at your location.
