What the I-PACE Key Is
The I-PACE uses a Passive Entry Passive Start proximity fob with an emergency blade concealed inside. The key communicates via low-frequency antenna fields around the door handles and near the start button. On higher specification trims, a UWB layer provides more precise proximity detection. The 12V Battery Consideration
The I-PACE uses a 12V auxiliary battery, separate from the main traction battery, to power all keyless entry and door handle systems. Before a spare key can be programmed, this 12V battery needs to be at a stable voltage. If the car has been unused for a few weeks, the 12V can drop below the threshold needed for KVM communication. Phone-as-a-Key Is Not a Replacement
Some I-PACE owners assume that because their car supports Phone-as-a-Key via the InControl Remote app, they do not need a physical spare. Phone-as-a-Key works alongside the physical key system. If the phone has no signal, no battery, or the InControl app is unavailable, you have no way into the car. A physical spare key is the backup that works in every situation.
